Roundabouts

Roundabouts are often a safer intersection solution than traffic signals or stop signs. They are increasingly becoming more popular across the nation because of the benefits they provide. By keeping traffic moving one-way in a counterclockwise direction, traffic flows smoothly with fewer delays, and the severity of crashes is greatly reduced.

The City of Frisco has four multi-lane roundabouts.

  • Gaylord Parkway and John Hickman Parkway
  • John Hickman Parkway and Cowboys Way
  • Teel Parkway and Rockhill Parkway
  • Warren Parkway and Ohio Drive

Frisco currently has more than 40 single-lane roundabouts in operation, primarily in residential neighborhoods. Visit the city’s GIS mapping page to see existing roundabouts and those under design and construction.

Safety

  • Studies have found that intersections converted from traffic signals or stop signs to roundabouts show a reduction in injury crashes.
  • Roundabouts are generally safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Roundabouts are safer for beginner and elderly drivers because vehicles travel in the same direction and at lower speeds.

Time Savings

  • Traffic volume studies show roundabouts increase traffic capacity at intersections.
  • Roundabouts also reduce vehicle stops and delays compared to traditional intersections.

Environmentally Friendly

  • Because roundabouts improve the efficiency of traffic flow, they also reduce vehicle emissions and fuel consumption.
  • Roundabouts reduce vehicle noise pollution because they do not require vehicles to stop and start  like traditional intersections.

Cost Savings

  • With limited or no electrical costs and lower maintenance  requirements, roundabouts are more cost efficient.
  • Unlike signalized intersections, roundabouts still operate during power outages, and there is no need for police to direct traffic.

Roundabout Rules

  • Observe all road rules.
  • Slow down.
  • Choose your lane based on the signs and pavement markings.
  • Yield for pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Yield to traffic in all lanes to your left before entering.
  • Don’t change lanes until you have exited the roundabout.
