Family Medical Leave

In accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), the City provides eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid job-protected leave every 12 months for specified family and medical reasons or 26 weeks of leave to care for an injured or ill service member. Although this leave is unpaid, employees are eligible to use their accrued leaves (e.g. sick leave) to continue receiving a paycheck.

The City uses a rolling calendar to calculate Family and Medical Leave (FML) eligibility. FML runs concurrent with other types of leave such as Short Term Disability and Workers' Compensation. Refer to the City's Family and Medical Leave (PDF) policy for more information.

Eligibility for FML

  • You must have been employed by the City for at least 12 months (need not be consecutive) prior to the leave date and;
  • You must have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12 months prior to the leave date

Eligible reason for leave includes, but are not limited to, the birth, adoption, or foster care of a child; caring for a parent or eligible dependent with a serious health condition; or caring for yourself due to a serious health condition.
