Reduce Wasted Food

As a recipient of the US Department of Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation Services' Composting and Food Reduction Waste Grant, the City of Frisco is now offering a Composting Program! The Composting Program is a pilot program comprised of the following four elements, with the intent to reach a broad Frisco audience. If interested in participating, please submit an Interest form. The method of composting that may fit best for your household may be different than that of your neighbors. Having multiple options on how to participate makes the program accessible to more residents.

How can I participate?

  • Use the Food Challenge: Funded separately (through the Applied Experience Grant) from the remaining three elements, the Use the Food program is a 6-week course where residents can learn about how to better plan, buy, store, and eat to reduce wasted food. The last week of coursework teaches backyard composting, which will serve as one of two options to satisfy the mandatory prerequisite of enrolling in the At-Home Composting Program.
  • Community Composting: Participants collect their kitchen scraps, store them in a sealed bucket (for up to a week), drop them off weekly at the Environmental Collection Center Community Compost bins during operating hours, mix it with mulched woods/browns (provided), and assist with turning the pile when needed. Minimum drop-off frequency is weekly, unless participants opt to freeze their kitchen scraps. The program is ideal for residents who live in multi-family units. The program is free for 16 months for the first 200 Frisco residents, and only 200 applicants will  be accepted at this time (duration and number of applicants offered free service are subject to change as grant funding allows).
  • Bucket Drop-off Composting: Participants collect their kitchen scraps, store them in a sealed bucket (for up to a week), drop them off at one of the multiple Frisco composting sites during operating hours, and take your bucket back home. The drop-off program is ideal for residents who want to reduce their environmental impact without the commitment of maintaining the compost. The program is free for 16 months for the first 200 Frisco residents, and only 200 applicants will be accepted at this time (duration and number of applicants offered free service are subject to change as grant funding allows).
  • At-Home Composting: Participants gain access to workshops, free mulched woods/browns for their compost, and trouble shooting assistance from a composting expert. The program is free for the first 100 Frisco residents, and only 100 applicants will be accepted at this time (duration and number of applicants offered free service are subject to change as grant funding allows).
