About the Collin County Teen Court Program

Collin County Teen Court is an independent program which is administered for the Frisco Municipal Court. Collin County Teen Court Program is normally held on Thursday evenings. You should arrive no later than 5:40 p.m. on the night your case is set for court. Unless there are circumstances which require something else, all cases referred by the Frisco Municipal Court will be held at the Collin County Sub-Courthouse.

Eligibility

Youths who are 10 through 18 years of age and currently enrolled in school who were issued class C citations are eligible to participate in the Teen Court program. Participation in Teen Court is based on an admission of guilt. Before enrolling, teens must appear before the Frisco Municipal Court judge with parent or guardian (if under 17) and enter a plea of guilty or no contest. In order to appear before the Frisco Municipal Judge, teens must appear with a parent or legal guardian (if under 17) at the Municipal Court Clerk's Office at 8450 Moore Street, Frisco, Texas 75034, within 20 business day from the date the citation was received to set a court date. The choice of Teen Court is a form of Deferral of Final Disposition.

Participation is voluntary; defendants may choose at any time to pay the fine(s) established for their specific offense(s).

Benefits

Successful completion of Teen Court requirements within the specified time frame results in dismissal of the case(s). Additionally, the teen becomes acquainted with the judicial system and experiences the satisfaction of contributing to the community, while gaining valuable work experience.

Sign Up

Enrollment in the Teen Court program must be done through the coordinator after the defendant has entered a plea in the original court and is deemed eligible for Teen Court. You will receive a court date by mail from the Teen Court office. You must notify the Teen Court office and the original court if you move or change your address.

Disciplinary Grid

Punishment consists of a specific number of community service hours plus a required a number of jury terms and a mandatory 500 word essay. Other requirements may be imposed at time of court appearance.

Class 1

Includes but not limited to:

  • Defective lights / equipment
  • Violation
  • No helmet
  • No seat belt
  • Anti-noise violation
  • Following too close
  • No turn signal
  • Speeding 1 to 10 miles per hour
  • Littering
  • Skating where prohibited

Punishment consists of:

  • Community service 4 to 12 hours
  • Jury terms 0 to 2
  • 500-word essay

Class 2

Includes but not limited to:

  • Driver's license violations
  • Disobey traffic control device
  • Wrong side of street
  • Impeding traffic
  • One-way street
  • Unsafe lane charge
  • Speeding 11 to 20 miles per hour
  • Failed to yield right of way
  • City curfew violations
  • Possession of fireworks

Punishment consists of:

  • Community service 9 to 28 hours
  • Jury terms 1 to 2
  • 500-word essay

Class 3

  • Speeding 21 to 40 miles per hour
  • Speeding-School Zone 1 to 10 miles per hour
  • Accident offense
  • Failure to maintain financial responsibility
  • Failure to identify
  • Unsafe Speed
  • Passing school bus
  • Driving when unlicensed
  • Leaving scene of accident
  • Illegal burning

Punishment consists of:

  • Community service 24 to 40 hours
  • Jury terms 1 to 3
  • 500-word essay

Class 4

  • Speeding 40 miles per hour
  • Speeding School Zone 11 miles per hour
  • Assault / Fighting
  • Truancy / Fail to attend school
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Tobacco offenses
  • Theft
  • Disruption of class
  • Criminal mischief
  • Gang Affiliation
  • (All other penal code offenses)

Punishment consists of:

  • Community service: 32 to 48
  • Jury terms 1 to 3
  • 500-word essay

Completing the Referral Process

Once your case has been referred to Collin County Teen Court, you will receive a letter in the mail confirming the referral and/or setting a court date. If you have not heard from Collin county Teen Court within 10 days, you should contact the Teen Court Office. Failure to do so may have a negative impact on your referral.

Failure to abide by the policies and procedures of the Teen Court Program will result in your case(s) being returned to the originating court, where fine(s) assessed at the original hearing will become due and payable and a conviction will appear on your record.
