My dog is microchipped, so it is already registered. Why would I need to register with the city?: There are several different manufacturers of microchips. Each has its own registry. Although Animal Services staff can normally access these databases, it isn't a 100% guarantee. By registering with the city we have your information no matter which chip your pet has.

1. My dog is microchipped, so it is already registered. Why would I need to register with the city?: There are several different manufacturers of microchips. Each has its own registry. Although Animal Services staff can normally access these databases, it isn't a 100% guarantee. By registering with the city we have your information no matter which chip your pet has.

2. Since the program is voluntary, why should I pay to sign up?: Again, the most important reason is to speed up the reunion with your pet. The McKinney Animal Shelter will reduce your fees if your pet happens to be impounded.

3. What is the difference between the 1 or 3 year registration?: The time frame is tied to what kind of rabies shots your pet is getting. There is a 1 year shot and a 3 year shot. The registration is tied to that shot. You cannot register your pet for 3 years if you are only getting a 1 year rabies shot.

4. Will I get reminders?: Yes, we will send you a reminder that it is time to renew your registration. That also means it is time to renew the rabies shot.
