Frisco Police Crime Scene Unit Adopts New National Science Standards

Frisco Police Crime Scene Unit Adopts New National Science Standards

(Septemeber 20, 2023) The Frisco Police Department is proud to announce that its Crime Scene Unit has been recognized for voluntarily adopting national forensic standards published by the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC), created by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  The OSAC standards are developed by more than 500 members of the forensic community to provide minimum requirements to ensure the results of forensic analysis can be relied upon by the criminal justice community.

The Frisco Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit, currently comprised of one Manager and four Criminalists, voluntarily underwent the process to ensure that they are held to the highest national forensic standards. The adoption of these standards provides an additional measure of confidence in the work the unit performs.  To adopt published standards, the unit incorporated best practices and standard protocols into its own management and quality system, following the leading industry applications in fields including crime scene investigation and friction ridge analysis.

“On behalf of the OSAC Program, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Frisco Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit for joining the growing list of forward-looking agencies that have implemented forensic science standards from the OSAC Registry into their operations,” said John Paul Jones II, OSAC Program Manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  “Their embrace of these nationally recognized standards is a direct demonstration of their commitment to high-quality forensic work. As a result, their stakeholders should be confident that the Frisco Police Department is dedicated to providing accurate and technically sound forensic services. We look forward to working with the Frisco Police Department as an OSAC Implementer as we continue to add standards to the OSAC Registry and enhance the practice of forensic science in the United States.”
