Frisco’s Public Works Department offers tips for protecting your home during freezing temperatures.
If a water line breaks and you do not know how to shut off the water at the main cut off, call the City of Frisco’s Public Works Department 24/7 at 972-292-5800.
Prevent Hazardous Conditions.
Turn your sprinkler system OFF to prevent ice on streets, sidewalks and driveways.
Protect Your Pipes.
Remove garden hoses from outside faucets and insulate them with styrofoam covers or rags.
Wrap all exposed pipes outdoors or in unheated areas of your home.
Open cabinet doors under sinks that are located on exterior walls.
Drip indoor faucets, approximately 5 drops per minute until the threat of freezing weather is past.
Cover vents around the foundation of your home.
If you are not going to be home, you may want to cut off the water at the property’s cut off valve and drain all the faucets.
Tankless Hot Water Heater Care
The city's Building Inspections Division suggests these steps during extended periods of freezing outdoor temperatures to avoid damage especially if your tankless hot water heater is located outside on a wall with northern or western exposure.
Check that all pipes are covered with insulation where located on the exterior of the home, in attics and garages.
Another method: Turn off the heater at the control panel and leave a small amount of water running on the hot water side at a faucet.
Consult your manufacturer’s care and maintenance manual for recommended steps specific to your water heater.
Winter Pool Care
Make sure your pool has an adequate amount of water. Evaporation still occurs in the winter months and keeping enough water in your pool helps the equipment run properly.
Ensure your pool’s freeze protector is working properly to prevent broken pool equipment.
Landscape Care
Move outdoor potted plants inside.
Cover tender plants that are budding or flowering with frost cloth.
Spread 2-4 inches of mulch in your garden or flower beds to protect plants from freezing.
